Usually, I like to have the sun behind me when I’m photographing whales. The whales sometimes have other ideas, and this humpback was very keen to keep me shooting into the sun.
This picture is of the dorsal fin and it’s possible to make out the vertebrae in its back. The mist you can see hanging above the whale is the ‘blow’. This is where the whale has exhaled upon surfacing. As there was no wind, the blow hung in the air for a little while. This whale has arched its back and is beginning a deeper dive (this usually happens after it has taken three breaths on the surface)
