One aspect of wildlife photography is the uncertainty of which animals you are likely to see. You can stack the odds a little in your favour at times, staying close to waterholes is one method, but there is still a level of unpredictability.
This is why coming across this pair was so rewarding. These are black rhinos. The easiest way to differentiate them from white rhinos is their pointed upper lip (white rhinos have a wider mouth and that is the origin of their name… wide rather than white).
Unfortunately, rhinos remain at high risk due to the ignorance and greed of certain people, so the mother is likely to be de-horned as a way of discouraging poachers. This does, however, make them more vulnerable to attack. Not so much for the adults, but defending the younger animals. Hence the name of this photograph.
This limited edition fine art print comes with a certificate of authenticity with hologram, photographer’s signature and edition number in series. These prints will not be offered for sale again once the current editions sell out.
