Title: Zulu
Photographer: Graham Elliott
Location: Port Elizabeth, South Africa
Caption: Zulu was the dominant male in the group of four lions at the reserve where I was volunteering. He also features in “Regal” in my first Wild Earth collection.
South African private reserves own their animals (this is not the case in some other African countries such as Zimbabwe) so animal and environmental management are critical to maintaining the right balance between predators, prey and the environment which needed to provide enough food all year round to support both. I had a chance to speak to the owner of the reserve and it is quite a fine balancing act to keep the proportions correct.
The only major predators in the reserve were Zulu, one other male and two female lions.
