Breaching is the most spectacular behaviour you’ll see from a whale and humpbacks seem to love doing it. While I haven’t seen breaches every time I’ve gone out to photograph them, it probably averages one trip in three.
This whale was 200m from our boat and this was one of a series of breaches. Whales have a very small ‘chin’ and you’ll usually see barnacles growing in a group just below it. This whale has a light underside and this is normal for southern hemisphere humpback whales. Northern hemisphere humpbacks tend to have a dark grey underside.
