Location: Sydney, Australia
This is one of my favourite images as it brings back the memory of being very close to this pair of humpbacks as they thrashed the water with their tails. We don’t understand why they do it and there didn’t seem to be any threat to these whales.
We had obeyed the whale watching rules that apply to the Sydney area and had left more than 100m between us and the whales and hadn’t approached them directly (powering a boat straight at a whale is a good way to make it dive and lose any chance of a good viewing).
Luckily for us they decided to hang in the water and occasionally give us a tail throw. Please refer to the “Sizing Guide” page for more information.
