Caption: This young elephant is with a group of mostly female elephants feeding along the side of a dried river in Namibia. Elephant groups are led by an older female and comprise the female elephants and pre-pubescent males. Once male elephants reach puberty they leave the group and usually fend for themselves.
It was recently observed that some males form bachelor “herds” and this is common in other grazing mammals. The dust and mud you can see are there to help protect the elephants hide from the sun.
