This image was taken at the Kwantu Private Game Reserve near Port Elizabeth in South Africa. In South Africa, the reserve owns the animals (in other countries they are owned by the state). I met with the owner of the reserve and he spoke about how difficult it was to manage the balance of the animals to make sure there were not too many predators for the prey animals, and that the environment could support the population.

This is Zulu, the dominant male in the reserve. Kwantu has a separate area where other big cats are rehabilitated after being badly treated in zoos or private parks. All of the animals are monitored and well cared for.
