Title: Chital
Photographer: Graham Elliott
Location: Kanha National Park, India
Caption: I was lucky to have to opportunity to go to central India and photograph tigers as part of a small group of photographers from Sydney. The Chital is a small deer and is very common. Stags reach 90 cm (35 inches) and doe’s 70 cm (28 inches) at the shoulder.
Kanha National Park is in Madhya Pradesh which has a lot of forest areas. Tigers love this environment and Chital are one of their prey animals. We would often see Chital feeding on the edge of the woods or in clearings.
This particular Chital was keeping one eye on us to make sure we weren’t a threat. You can see the velvet on his antlers (deer have antlers and antelope have horns).
