Title: Group Effort

Photographer: Graham Elliott

Location:  Namibia

Caption:   There are ten elephants in this photograph (two of them are tricky to find!) and this was typically how we would find them.

Elephants stay in matriarchal groups which are usually headed by the oldest female. She knows the area and where to find food and water. The group includes all of the female elephants and the prepubescent males.

Once males reach sexual maturity they leave the group. It had been thought that they led a solitary life and occasionally meet the main group, but recent research (in Namibia) has shown that they sometimes form small bachelor groups.

Only the dominant male in the area will mate, so it’s a waiting game for the other males.
